Why No Word

  • Why No Word

I was shocked when I came down at the week-end, to discover that there had been a spate of burglaries in West Bay!  This unusual but nonetheless alarming news was conveyed by neighbours.  Given the relative "safety" of Millport I suppose it's not surprising that eventually some opportunist toerag would find easy pickings here.  But surely this site would be an ideal place to warn people with second homes (whatever your opinion of them may be)  that this sort of thing has raised it's ugly head.  I'm on the site every day!

It would be useful to know, how and when the break in's were effected, to allow us as home owners to assess what measures we can take to make life difficult for thieving scum. I appreciate that this would put an onus on "someone" to report this sort of thing but as it thankfully doesn't happen often, I wouldn't think it too onerous a task.  Perhaps a short Police spot with some advice would be useful, any takers amongst the island's bobbies?

Whatever happens (or doesn't) please remember those of us who are not fortunate enough to be permanent residents but still care very passionately about Millport and anything that affects life on the island.

Knowing as I do, how the printed word can be misconstrued, let me please be clear, this is not me "having a go" at anyone.  It's simply a plea for help from someone who can't manage to be there all the time.  Thanks

    Hi Larry

Sorry to hear this.   Perhaps we need an active Neighbourhood Watch on the island.   I can only offer the usual advice, close downstairs curtain, insurance quality locks on doors and windows, and if possible, all downstairs windows double glazed and locked.

It is not easy in the holiday season to spot strangers but I wonder if anyone else has any ideas?

Larry, you aren't the only one to be shocked!  I live in Millport and this is the first I have heard of the problem.  I do agree that postings on s1 about this sort of incident could be beneficial to everyone.

June - I thought we had a neighbourhood watch scheme already?

Is it active?   How does it work?

The day after the break-ins I checked the 2 holiday homes next door (they were fine). Surely most, if not all holiday house owners have a neighbour who keeps an eye on their property in their absence ?

I gather that there has also been some criminal activity by way of "phishing" for bank account details with plausible phone calls purporting to be from your bank requesting PIN number details.  As with the e:mail version of this scam, you should always ensure you are actually in contact with your bank and never provide full details of your personal banking information.  Banks will normally ask only for selected characters from your password or PIN rather than the full password/PIN.

Oh gosh, thanks for bringing it to our attention, guess we will all need to increase our security now.

Thanks June, Sandy and all, I appreciate that keeping an eye out for strangers is a fairly futile task particularly in the summer months with a place as popular as Millport.  Very probably the only thing to do is as June suggests, check doors windows etc are locked and keep an eye out for each other.  Raised awareness is also a great tool too,  so I suppose that's what I've done with my first comment.  I still think it would be beneficial for a general notice from the police to let us know when this sort of thing happens.  Lets face it a few hundred "unofficial deputies" would be useful to help keep an eye on things and report any suspicious activity.  Once again thanks for your interest and support.
