Stricken fishing boat towed to Millport pier
21 September, 2012Largs RNLI volunteers towed a fishing boat and her crew into Millport yesterday (Thursday, September 20) after the vessel had been drifting out of control in poor visibility.
Thanks to high-tech direction-finding equipment, the lifeboat RA Wilson was able to track down the boat, which had drifted out position some distance south of Garroch Head, at the southern end of the Isle of Bute.
The stricken craft was safely towed into berth alongside Millport Pier.
The lifeboat launched at 4.18pm after a call from the commercial fishing boat Venture. Crew reported that the boat had lost it steering and there was also a mechanical fault with the engine. The craft couldn't be controlled and was drifting - it had already moved out of the position reported when the lifeboat arrived, in bad weather.
The eight-ton boat was towed to Millport at six knots, which meant it didn't arrive until 6.50pm. The boat was safely berthed and the crew all unhurt.
