Power firm 'optimistic' of restoring Millport power soon after storm damage

Cumbrae has been left without power, as storms caused cuts blacking out Millport after wind and rain in the early days of the new year.

However, s1millport spoke to SSE Power at 1pm on Thursday 5th January, when a spokesman said that the firm was 'very optimistic' of having power restored to all customers by the end of the day.

If you are concerned about vulnerable neighbours or relatives call the firm's hotline on 0800 300 999.

The spokesman also said that the firm were "aware that there had been disruptions to power" in Millport, and apologised for inconvenience caused to customers. Work to restore power to the 9,000 affected homes has been hampered by continuing storms.

You can follow updates on the work to restore power here on the SSE Power website.

they are saying the same as yesterday, they hope to have it on but cant guarantee it, we have no heating, no cooking facilities and no hot water, wel'r not taking the chance, getting off the island before it gets dark

There must be lots of people fleeing the island from must be horrendous conditions. I'm in Aberdeen where we have heat and light so am staying put for now.

Probably by the time I get home, the contents of the freezer will be making their presence known.

I think that the Hydro Board will be receiving quite a few claims.

However I hear that the GARRISON CAFE has opened its doors and is providing hot drinks so a VERY BIG THANK YOU to them for that.

Keep safe all of you and hope normality is restored soon.

I have just been watching the 6 o'clock news. Reported that Bute had no electricity but no mention of Millport.

Sandy Morton says

It is regrettable that the helpline stopped answering towards the end of the power cut and that we, on the island, had no knowledge of what was happening.  However whilst we were suffering the trauma of having no power all of the lights at Hunterston were still bright.  Is it not possible that instead of our power coming from a remote area of Scotland which does suffer frequent bad weather that we could just have a simple supply from Hunterston?  An undersea cable would be much shorter than the existing one from Bute and the electricity has to get to Bute first.  Seems to make sense to me?
