Millport Raft Race firmly back on the calendar

by Charles Kelly
  • 'Simon & Cherl' set the fashion trend as usual
  • Wooden Spoon winners, the ladies from Lady Margaret Hospital
  • The winners - "Castaways"
What a perfect day to re-launch the famous Millport Raft Race after a gap of many years. Thanks to the initiative of Gillian Docherty and her team this event is now firmly back on the calendar.
Gillian put her persuasive powers to good use and managed to get 'Simon & Cherl' to drop in on the Island (didn't you see the chopper?) to present the prizes. First to arrive was "Castaways" from the Hamlet B&B, second was "Tits Up" from the Newton Bar, third was "McGees Pies" and the wooden spoon went to "Shiela's Whelp" and the team from Lady Margaret Hospital.
Cumbrae's own Sailing School provided the essential safety cover for the event and the whole race from Kames Bay to the pier was followed by record crowds who revelled in the fun and the action.

Charlie - thank you so much for your great photos so those of us who couldn't be there could share in such a superb day.

Also, Charlie if I remember correctly, your contribution to organising the whole weekend was tremendous.   So thanks again.   Just wish I could have been there,

Well done everyone.   Millport at it's best is unbeatable!

Gillian Docherty says

It was a great weekend and I thoroughly enjoyed it (though next year I'm getting on a raft and joining in the rafting fun).

Thanks to all who helped with the organising of the race, Margaret from The Royal George Hotel, Lizzie Barbour from Millport Playgroup, The Watersports Centre for providing on the water safety cover, John Burtt for donating the winning shield, Stewart Cape of Escape Promotions who provided music and announced the arrivals as well as providing the disco in the Royal George on sunday evening.  Thanks to all the shops and pubs who donated raffle prizes and to those who helped collect money for the Playgroup (total raised will be announced once I have collected all the money in).

A big thank you to all the rafters and spectators who made it such a wonderful day.  I hear people are already planning their rafts for next year; I'm looking forward to it already.

Gillian

So far the raft race has raised £507 for Millport Playgroup.  I still have some money to collect but once it is all in we are hoping to purchase some outdoor storage/equipment for the playgroup.  Thanks to everyone who donated.
