As a regular visitor to Millport, I visited the "new" Garrison this August. A beautiful building, both inside and out, (even without the old tennis courts !), but I was left

Arran, Bute, Greater and Little Cumbrae, Moray and the parts of Highland not already within the Crofting Counties are to be designated as new crofting areas. The move follows a public consultation
As Susan Swarbrick describes it in The Herald today: "It was a day when grown men openly shed a tear, even the most hardy confessing to a lump in the throat."

7/5/2008Help Maggie swim round Cumbrae
Maggie Hodgart's 1st crossing of the channel 23rd of July 1987
Hi, my name is Maggie Hodgart and I am going to attempt to swim round Cumbrae on the 28th of June this year. The watersports centre on Cumbrae will be escorting me round the island when I swim, but the cost for this is £180. As I am training to swim the Channel in August and the cost for a support boat for this is £2000 - which I'm still trying to raise money for and get sponsorship - the cost of swimming round Millport is an added expense. I am appealing to local shops and businesses in Millport to help me out. I am swimming the Channel in August to raise money for the breast cancer campaign Tickled Pink.
I swam the English Channel in 1987 and the Irish channel in 1988; Loch Lomond, Loch Rannoch, Lake Windermere, the Suez Canal and a lot of other swims, although it was some 20yrs ago. I think this could put Millport on the map in long distance swimming and maybe attract a lot of other swimmers in years to come to want to come and swim round it.
I hope you can help in some way - I will be only too willing to advertise for anyone willing to help.

Note: Margaret has two daughters, Kimberlee, 13, and Morgan, 10. Her girls will be on the boat when she attempts the Channel again on her 42nd birthday, the 3rd of August 2008. She remains one of only two women ever to have swum the North Channel between Northern Ireland and Scotland.
