22/12/2009Let's make a list: the Best of the Best in Millport
We might be facing turmoil and great challenges - financial, environmental, political, local - but let's see if we can make a list of everything that's been GOOD.
So what are the best things to happen to Millport over the last decade? Think of fantastic events, local heroes, town improvements and positive developments, shared joys or happy memories.
There are lots of great things about living in Millport - and we're making a list of the best. Post your suggestions and we'll compile our s1millport Best of the Best list.

Where does one start?
Renovation of the Garrison. Beautiful flowers in the town all summer long. New shops opening. Great community spirit. Blue flag beaches. Development plan for the island coming together. Great new library.
But as always, fantastic scenery and the best place ever to live.
Happy 2010 to us all.

Here's my 10 year memory. On September 11, 2001 we had just come in from North America, settled into the big bedroom at the Millerston, turned on the TV, and saw the second plane hit the twin towers in New York. A few of years later, while passing through Glasgow Airport on our next pilgrimage to Millport, we missed the terror attack by 30 minutes. We did however get to witness the great Smeaton quote of "Don't mess with Glasgow". It reminded me of some SFA referee saying the same thing at Tynecastle as he awarded a dubious penalty.
What has all this talk of violence to do with the peace and tranquility of Cumbrae? Absolutely nothing--its just a coincidence.
To all the lucky residents of my favorite island---a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2010. I hope we are able to come again very soon. In the meantime, don't change anything.

- What about your new ferry?
-
The 2003-5 baby boom! The under 3s nursery! Def the Garrison and George. Daniella Nardini skinny dipping at Newton Beach. Oh, and Roger Taylor drinking in the George and parking that fabulous yacht of his in the bay. And the QE2 passing on her final voyage. And all the new year parties. I apologise for my entirely inappropriate use of grammar.
Saddest thing? Our Christmas decorations are still the poorest in Scotland.
- The most wonderful thing about Millport is the fact that it has not changed that much and is still the tranquil haven it has always been.
-
The new swing park. The new all weather football pitch in the Garrison grounds. The new and inproved sewage system which lead to cleaner beaches.
The hanging baskets.
Along with a new ferry we have a better and later ferry and bus service. The beautifully restored stone work on the Cathederal.
I agree with Emma about Christmas decorations. Now that we have the Garrison in it's full glory, how about the sunken garden having a Christmas theme with lights etc to take us into the next decade?
- I have always missed the great sense of community when I lived away from the island. It is wonderful to see this surface so strongly again with the resurrection of the Garrison and CCDC. Let's all pull together to make the island an even better place to live !!!
