6/5/2008Day Of Action - Keep Cumbrae Beautiful!

To highlight the problem of rubbish littering streets, river banks and the shore, Kenneth Gibson MSP is mounting a day of action in the towns and villages of Cunninghame North in conjunction with the "Keep Scotland Beautiful" campaign.

If you fancy joining in on Saturday 31st May, raising awareness by helping to collect litter round Cumbrae please check for details to be posted on this site nearer the time.

Great idea but not new - the Community Council organised "Clean Up Sunday" about 35 years ago - over 30 tons of rubbish was collected. I was there then and I'll be out to do it again.
Great idea, the Millport Initiative do clean up walks and beaches every year with our Conservation Group but I am sure that Frank Corcoran, our Chair would be delighted for us to to join in, as I would.
Well done Community Council for reviving this great idea. All of the Millport organisations used to join in. We even had the toddlers with plastic bags taped over their hands helping. It was a great day out followed by a bar-b-q at Fintry if I remember correctly.
Much of the rubbish around Cumbrae is deposited from the sea around the strandlines. In the past, student projects from the Marine Station have analysed this debris and a significant proportion consists of sharp items (broken glass, even discarded hypodermic needles) and sewage related debris (condoms, pantie liners), so it is important from a health & safety point of view that anyone handling this material should take great care and at least use strong rubber gloves.
Any more information?
Posters are now going up around the town. Meet at the Pier at 10.30 am Saturday 31st May. we have some bags, litter picker and gloves but not enough to pass out to everyone, so bring your own gloves at least, we will get plenty of plastic bags from the grounds maintenance and they will also uplift filled bags from the road end. This will be a community effort and hope that we have a good turnout from all the groups! Frank Corcoran Initiative Community Company
Great idea and a great day - but - unfortunately very poorly supported.
