CCDC members meet Barrrowmans at signing of Millport book

Members of the Cumbrae Commuity Development Company have met with John Barrowman and his sister Carole, at a signing of their new book set in Millport.

June Allison reports:

Today we met with John and Carole Barrowman at their Waterstones signing which was extremely busy, so we were lucky to be able to see them before they began their marathon task.

We were happy to be able to present them with photographs of the jetty on Cumbrae which seemed to be very much in keeping with the book “Hollow Earth” which is based here on the island.

John and Carole were kind enough to sign books for us – one in particular for all the people of Cumbrae, which will be on display in the Garrison along with some copies of the book for purchase.

In the photograph you can see – from left to right – Margaret Kennedy of the Royal George Hotel and I.O.C.T.A., her granddaughter Megan (who has been in correspondence with the authors), Ross Goldie, Chairman of CCDC, John Barrowman (with photograph), Carole Barrowman (with photograph), Charles Kelly of I.O.C.T.A and June Allison, CCDC.

We truly believe that John and Carole’s book will put Cumbrae firmly on the map for all readers and hope, in the event, of a television series that some of the filming may come to the island.

Charles Kelly says

Yes, although it was brief, it was a good meeting yesterday. John and Carole are very down to earth and positively dynamic people. What also impressed me was the number of fans that were queuing up from the time Waterstones had opened to have their copies of Hollow Earth signed. By the time for the signing I would not have been surprise if there were several hundred waiting and my thought was these are just a tiny fraction of the potential new converts to the charms of Cumbrae. Several will certainly come with their parents this year but, as the Hollow Earth concept is developed nationwide and internationally, there will be scope for attracting a considerable theme based tourist trade to the benefit of the island.

Small correction - althought I am always keen to find ways to develop the marketing profile of the island I am not actually a committee member of IOCTA.

Fantastic book, not the type  I would normally read, but I really couldn't put it down. I hope it brings new people to the Island and that any prospect of a film or series involves some filming on the Island.

Tom McAulay says

Looks like a successful meeting with the Barrowmans and a good photograph. I understand that Megan was a particular hit with John, so well done Megan!

Any thoughts about using the photograph to gain some further publicity in the press?

If there is any prospect of a tv programme (series) then rather than simply hoping for Millport to be a possible location we should be proactive in trying to make that happen. I'm sure Charles, Margaret and the others are already working on that and if I can be of any help I'll be happy to do so.
