Visit of Lord and Lady "Askmore"

by Sandy Morton
This was Lord and Lady "Askmore" arriving at Millport to raise money for some charity.
aka George Heron and Tommy Gillan. Donnie McLauchlan picked them up at the back of the island some place and brought them to the Old Pier. Sandy may know more about it than I do
I thought it might be a good subject for the nostalgia Millport on S1millport.
Forwarded from Janette McGeoch (nee Gillan). Sandy doesn't remember this one (1950 and we didn't come home until 1953) although I am quite sure that somebody here will and will be able to fill in the details.

A challenge for the s1 detectives...........the identity of the little boy at the back? Perhaps a contemporary of Sandy?

M Janette McGeoch says

I think the "wee" boy could be Campbell McLachlan as the man with Donnie on the boat is Campbell's Dad Hugh.

M Janette McGeoch says

The event was British Legion Gala Week

ANDREA McLACHLAN says

BOY IN PHOTOGRAPH IS CAMPBELL WE ALSO HAVE COPY OF PHOTOGRAPH

Phil Dodd says

Ahh the good old days. Nowadays, the parents of the wee boy would have the social services breathing down their necks for allowing him to have fun like that on a boat - it’s far too dangerous.

My earliest memories of Millport are from when I was about the same age as that wee boy and used to "help out" at the jetty with the hire boats. I think it was Mauchlan's at that time and it would have been just a few years after that photo was taken.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
