The Old Grain Mill in Cardiff Street

by Lyn Gordon

When researching the history of Millport for the children, we have read that Millport was named after the old grain mill, which was situated at the top of Cardiff street. Can some one advise if this was the top left or right of Cardiff street and an estimation of the year?

Thank you.

Sorry,we mean't to say that we have bought a flat at the top of Cardiff street, so the children are excited that they are part of Millport's heritage.

Thank you,

Ewan & Finlay (11 & 5 years old)

In his guidebook to the Cumbraes, published in 1886, W Lytteil tells us that "Millburn House stands near the site of the old cornmill, and Millbrae is the upper portion of Cardiff Street" Millburn House stands at the top of Cardiff Street, on the corner of West bay Road & Golf Road.

Hi Lyn so pleased to see and hear you are settling in andobviously enjoying the flat.  I did try to email you to thank you for the lovely gift but emails was returned.  Belated thank you and maybebump into to you around the town. By thesound of things you would be looking into the old mill from the flat, makes a bit of sense given that  the Old Mill Burn is off Golf Road, !! Regards margaret ann hughes

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
