by Campbell Templeton

The garrison wall was moved in 1959 to widen the road. Can anyone name the workers! or maybe have some better photo's.

No Alan but they were lifting the sand that you can see further back . The men are from the Bute County Council the yard was where the petrol station from Alan Mechan is now.. I am positive your brother Duncan is standing on the lorry. Next to him from right to left is Bertie Rae he was foreman then Danny Elliott from 1 Howard st next to Town Hall, then a man called Bob he was a woodcutter and stayed at the Ferry at Fairhaven Rd.. The boss was Kelt Mc Innes who stayed at the old Smiddy in Crawford St. The wee boy in the fur jacket is myself . Long time ago!

Great picture cambell! I expect my dad Davy, may be amongst the the men in the background. The man stood facing the camera is a possible, but I,m sure he would have been waring a flat cap. I remember the old Bedford bus in the background.

Any more............Ali?

Phil Dodd says

Campbell,

We must be about the same age. Danny Elliot however lived in one of the top flats at 56 Howard Street, next to the Town Hall/Cinema, not number 1. We had one of the middle floor flats at that address for our holidays every August, and often remember being woken late at night by Danny making his way up stairs after a few too many.

Sandy Caughey says

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
