Passing on some information I came accross in "A Short History " about "The Isles of Cumbrae Old and New" by James, brother of Archibald Templeton Mc Connochie. Given to me by Jenny Orr while I visited Millport.
page 24 (THe Crocodile Rock)
The idea of it's having any similaritiy to a Levithan of the deep came to Mr. Robert Brown, a retired Architect from Glasgow. The year would be about 1900. At that time there was a band of retired business men in Millport who daily met at 12 noon in the licensed premises of Mr. James Paterson in Glasgow Street and were known locally as the "Toddy Brigade". Let it be that much of the town Council business was discussed and finally settled there. On one occasion the toddy being disposed of with relish the Brigade adjourned for lunch at 1p.m. Mr. Brown standing at the door viewing the horizon said quietly:-
"How many had I the day Jimmie?"
to which Jimmie casually replied:_
"Oh just the usual Broon!"
"Aye, aye just that but I have an idea that rock", pionting with his stick, "is awful like a crocodile".
The following day the people going about their lawful business were slightly awed to see Mr. Brown walking along Glasgow Street bearing several brushes and three pots of paint, black, white and red, and from that day to this the crocodile has remained in the same colours although frequently renovated. Within the last twelve months the writer has seen old engraving depicting some of the numbers of the "Brigade" with "Broon holding aloft a paint brush with a crocodile lying at his feet. The engraving is dated 1896. Hope this is interesting for anyone. "Aye"
Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
