In reply to your post about the Motor Manufacturer for the self drive hire boats, I do believe that was the Stuart Turner company.
My Uncle Jim Williamson lived in West Bay (18) and he had a clinker built motor boat called "Shiela" she was a little larger than the hire boats and she certainly had a Stuart Turner engine. I believe the desin was ST P5 & P6 5hp usually hand start, although they did produce a Dynastart and one with a Starter motor. Having hired many of these lovely craft in my childhood (in the 50's) I remember them being crank started and as far as I know there were never any batteries on board?
Where did all those beautiful little craft from Rothesay, Largs, Millport and all the other resorts go? I would love to own one now! The last restored one I saw for sale was 6 years ago with an asking price of £4,500.00p - John Anderson.
Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
