Millport Town Council

by Gordon Hart

Here's one that I wonder if anyone know when it was taken, my guess is sometime in the mid 50's. I enclose also a 2nd sheet on which I have tried to identify the names of the people. I got the picture from my late parents drawer of photographs and they had in turn received it from Isobel Mclachlan whose handwriting I have tried to decipher to supply names. Photo by Walter Kerr

According to records in JRD Campbell's book : Mr. R. Mackay & Miss J. Kerr were members of Millport Town Council 1952 - 1954. Mr. T. Hunter was a member 1951 - 1953 which would put the photo at either 1952 or 1953 I would guess. Mr. W. Kerr (centre in the photo) was a council member 1945 - 1961 & provost from 1952 - 1955. (Perhaps the photo is the council when he became provost in 1952 ?)  There was a Mr D. McLachlan on the council from 1946 to 1963 who was provost from 1955 - 1958. Mr. R. Mitchell was a council member 1946 - 1957 & Mr. D. Hamilton 1950 - 1965. Mr J. Barr 1952 - 1957.

Need a bit more time but Jenny Kerr was on the Council in the late 1950's - she was instrumental in having my milk machine sited beside the weighbridge and not almost opposite her shop.  Didn't ever hear of Tommy Hunter referred to by that name - I always new him as Tom Hunter.  Isn't John Bard actually John Barr?

Sandy Morton says

Christine McCulloch tells us that the Sergeant is Hector McKenzie and the Constable could be R Mitchell.  She doesn't think that  Bertie McKay is in the photo but she'll check with Conway when he gets home from hospital.

Looks like David Hepburn on the back row far left.

Sandy Morton says

It does indeed

IAN GREAVES says

Donny McClachlan fishmonger, front left with chain i think.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
