I am doing some research into this Society which was formed in the 1880s or there about and dissolved as recently as 2007 according to Companies House records. It was set up to support the poor of Cumbrae and in 1890 the Society held a charity concert in the Millport Town Hall. A detailed drawing featuring the artists taking part in this event was made at the time and pictures from this drawing, which is owned by Alastair & Margaret Duthie, are attached.

If anyone can throw any light on this organisation and in particular the more recent history, Secretary, Chair person or board members etc., any contact will be much appreciated. I have details from the Largs & Millport of 1890 detailing the artists who provided their services free for the concert and also a report of the AGM in 1889.  I plan to write up an overview of the Society and will welcome any calls on 0773 240 8202 or posts here on S1.

Using Street View in Google Maps, the house on West Bay Road, opposite the west end of the fenced off childrens play area, matches the house at the bottom left of the drawing.

Phil Dodd says

Sorry. Should have said bottom right of the drawing.

Charles Kelly says

Thanks Phil, I had already identified this as "Osbourne" in West Bay. The bottom left building (Hotel) has been converted into houses but the structure of the front remains substantially as in the pic.

I have checked some of my old Glasgow Post Office directories - the oldest being 1947 but there is no mention.

If you ask at The Glasgow Room in the Mitchell Library, Charing Cross. They may have some doucmentation relating to this society. The staff at the Glasgow room are very obliging and will check catalogues for you, they will also, for a small charge photocopy relevant documents.

Thanks Margaret for this suggestion. I had already contacted the MItchell but again drew a blank as they could find nothing on the Society. The picture was handed over to Garrision House for safekeeping on Thursday of this week and can now be seen in the Garrison.

Did you ask for specific searches?

The library staff are excellent but good as they are they have limited time for searches.

The Kelly's directories and the Post Office Directories (hard copies kept on the shelves in the Glasgow Room) have listings of many obscure benevolent funds and societies. The listings usually give a contact address of the Law firm dealing with the funds.

I don't get the chance to visit the Mitchell as often as I did before moving to Millport but I will ask among some people I know who do quite a bit of research there.

The directories are not indexed so it would be a case of checking each year to find out if there is an entry.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
