Fern Andy

Alistair Smith says:
I remember seeing a photo of Andy, in his cave/hollow. Who was he, how did he end up living life as a hermit?

Not a lot of info on Andy but apparently he sold ferns from his cave hence the name 'Fern'.

DAVID STEVENSON says

Fern Andy, real name Andy Sullivan, was the island's hermit or recluse, he made a living from making pots & pans for locals, and selling sprigs of heather & ferns to holiday makers.
His cave/hollow was more of a overhang and is located round at the begining of the Targets going towards Fintry Bay on the west side of the island. Unfortunatly time has taking its toll and the overhang has crumbled away and is over growing with brambles.
My great uncle Jimmy Stevenson spend many a summers night with Andy, no doubt over a bottle of whisky.

Alistair Smith says

Thank you David and Allan. I presume he did not spend all winter here, it's very exposed. He must have had a home in the town??

allan sinclair says

Alistair i think that was his only home Davie S Will know more about it !

Margaret Carson says

My dad told me that Fern Andy was the 'black sheep' of a very wealthy Dublin family but I have no evidence to support this.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
