BUTE TERRACE

Over 50 years ago I spent many a happy Summer in Millport, staying in a lovely old house on Bute Terrace (Strahoun) - it was such a striking place and the gardens all along Bute Terrace i remember at the time were a marvel with orchards and terraced lawns - they really were spectacular. I was so excited to return to Millport after such a long absence and the first thing I did was to take the walk along Howard Street to look up at the gardens and remember the house I stayed in as a child. I couldnt have been more shocked! Teh place seems to have been allowed to go wild, with enormous 80 foot trees blocking all of the sunlight and the gardens full of weeds and overgrown. Even the house I used to stay in seemed all shut up and for sale! Whatever happened to this beautiful terrace and those beautiful gardens? If anyone has any old photos they could share of Bute Terrace or Strahoun in their former glory I woudl be so grateful to remember those happy days - maybe on day someone will bring things back to their former glory!

I do not know where Strahoun was on Bute Terrace but we had a holiday flat on Howard Street next to the Town Hall/Cinema and at the bottom of the Bute Terrace Gardens. We went there from the mid 1950s to the 1990s and the bottom terrace was always an overgrown jungle with the trees so high that they cut out much of the light from our flat. I remember my parents at one time trying to get the owners to trim the trees as they were reaching right across Howard Street.
