Hi All,

I'm researching the Finnie family of Kilmarnock, who apparently originally moved to Kilmarnock from Constablewood (Largs).  According to my 4th great-uncle's obituary, there were various branches of the Finnie family buried at Millport.  I also understand that Kirkton Farm was once owned by the family?  I'd love to hear from anybody who has any information on, or relationship to, this family?  thank you. Kind regards, Lynne (writing from a wet and stormy Melbourne!!)

Corinne Fordschmid says

I've just posted a long story about the Fords from Millport in the 1800s in the "memories" section: "Tracing Ford Footprints in Millport".

Anyone else out there tracing Millport or Lanarkshire connected families with the surnames: Ford, Wright, Stalker, Jack, Fitzpatrick & Purdie?

Corinne Fordschmid says

Unfortunately I can't get to any of the society's wonderful events as I live in Switzerland. I'm very keen to get in touch with the following presenters, if possible: Ms Jean Leader (Glasgow), Mr Jim Grant (Scottish Maritime Museum, Irvine) and Mr Rob Ferguson (Dalgarven Mill). Can anyone help me with that?

Geoff Moore says

Corinne,

You can contact these people via the following websites:

Jim Grant (www.scottishmaritimemuseum.org)

Jean Leader (www.jeanleader.co.uk)

Rob Ferguson

Hope this helps

I am a descendent of the Samuel FORD and Margaret WRIGHT and thought web search found the article by Corinne Fordschmid asking about other FORDs.  Just wondering how I might contact Corinne.

My great grandfather was James FORD who arrived in Port Phillip on boad the Morning Light 7 August 1857 and susequently married Elizabeth MUIR.

Lisa Guimaraens says

Hello from South AfricaI am researching the family tree of George Inglis (b. about 1873). He married Jean Murdoch (not sure of year) and they had three daughters - Barbara (b?), Margaret (b. 1906) and Elizabeth (b. 1910). George was in the Railway Pioneer Regiment during the Boer War in South Africa and listed an aunt, Maggie Inglis, 36 Glasgow St, Millport, as his next of kin. It seems as if the girls and their mum moved to South Africa before the 1930s.It would be super to have any information as I have tried various websites like www.freereg.org.uk and www.familysearch.org but haven't had any luck. Many thanksLisa

Sandy Morton says

sri it won't help but 36 Glasgow Street is the Tavern Bar!  It does have a flat upstairs but as far as I know it is number 35.

Johan Lochridge says

Lisa,Margaret Ingles is in 1901 Census with siblings at 34 Glasgow Street Millport.  She was a nurse, born Coatbridge, Lanarkshire abt 1858.I see George in 1881 and 1891 census with his grandfather in Coatbridge.  I will try to find him in 1871 and hope that it will show parents.  You could register with scotlandspeople.gov.uk and it will cost you £7.00 for enough credits to get his birth record check from 1872 - 1874.When checking other sites try Ingles or Engles even. If I find out any more I will post again

Johan Lochridge says

Following on from above, clearly I wasn't going to find George in 1871 as he wasn't born then.  However, I did establish that George born 1848 in Bothwell, Lanarkshire, lived in Coatbridge and married Eliazabeth Allan in Livingston in 1871.  They are the most likely parents.  They had another son, James b 3 December 1874 and sadly Elizabeth died before the end of that year age only 23 years.

Going back to Maggie (Margaret), in both 1881 and 1891 census she worked as a servant for Peter T Young in Glasgow.  You could have a lot of interesting research to do with your Inglis family if you care to carry it on, so good luck.

Lisa Guimaraens says

Thank you Sandy and Johan. That is very helpful! We are very grateful for your assistance.Lisa
